The end of the college football season means its time to hand out letter grades for every 130 school that plays in the Bowl Subdivision. Utah opens up conference play on the road in Tempe, Arizona, in a game against Arizona State on Sept. 24. This was evident in last year's matchup when the Cougars went up 28-7 on the Utes at halftime. Utah stormed back to win the game and piled on 38 points in the second half. Washington State will be coming off their league season opener vs USC and will be making their first road trip of the season after starting the first three at home.

Utah will open the season in the Swamp against Florida, the beginning of a revamped out-of-conference slate that's coming up in the coming years. The OOO conference games are wrapped up back home against SUU and SDSU. The Utes miss Cal and Washington, just like they did this past season. Utah opens up conference play on the road against ASU, which I expect will be a battle as Jayden Daniels, I'm sure, will be hoping for a much better result than the last two games. OSU at home is the second conference game, and it will be interesting to see what the Beavs look like next season after a nice season this year. The Utes will begin conference play on the road against Arizona State.

Their only Pac-12 loss came against Oregon State in 2021, which means the Beavers will come to Salt Lake City in 2022. For the second straight season, Utah will not play California or Washington. In 2023, Utah will have two different north division teams that will be taken off of their schedule for two seasons. Times and television assignments will be announced at a later date. After Georgia won last year's College Football Playoff title in thrilling fashion, the 2022 season looks to pick up where it left off with exciting action. The plan also includes the new schedules for all 12 teams since the conference's announcement of only playing fellow members of the conference. The Ducks put a sour note on an otherwise special season for the Utes when these teams last met. Oregon smashed Utah in the 2019 Pac-12 Championship Game, earning a victory behind 208 rushing yards and three touchdowns from CJ Verdell. It cost the Utes any shot at securing a College Football Playoff spot. The Ducks will be hunting for a new quarterback after Tyler Shough transferred to Texas Tech and looking to shore up a porous defense under new coordinator Tim DeRutyer.

That's been a persistent problem for UCLA in recent seasons. Utah has run off four straight victories over the Bruins while averaging 47.5 points per contest. The Utes rolled up 536 total yards, while also forcing five turnovers, on their way to a 49-3 victory in 2019. UCLA has struggled under Chip Kelly since he took over the program in 2018. Entering his fourth season, Kelly has won just 10 games with the Bruins. Utah fell in its season opener to the Trojans a year ago.

With a host of talented and experienced contributors back, led by quarterback Kedon Slovis, USC will be an early favorite to repeat as Pac-12 South champions. Slovis has a track record for putting up ridiculous numbers in the Air Raid offense. It will make Utah earning its first win in Los Angeles since 1916 an even bigger challenge. USC leads the all-time series 12-6 and owns a two-game winning streak over the Utes. Former Utah assistant Jay Hill has built an FCS national power in Ogden.

The Wildcats have won at least a share of four straight Big Sky titles and reached the FCS playoff semifinals in 2019. Weber State went 5-0 in its spring season, received an automatic bid to the playoffs, and is ranked No. 3 in the FCS Top 25 Polls. Utah is 5-0 all-time against the Wildcats, including a victory in 2018 during the most recent meeting between the two in-state foes. That happens to be previous college team that head coach Chip Kelly worked for. This means they might be having a letdown game against the Utes in this game.

Notes – A win OR loss to USC the previous week makes this a tricky matchup either way. With a win, the celebrations could continue into the next week when preparations for ASU start. A loss to USC could be mentally demoralizing to a team that has high hopes going into 2021. Either way, the Utes will lose if they are not focused the following week. Arizona State averaged over 40 points per game last year and 264 yards rushing per game. BYU is a similiar opponent on the out-of-conference schedule.

Stroud, who in just his first season as a starter threw for over 3,800 yards with 38 touchdowns. His stats were largely assisted by the fact that he had three or four of the top wide receivers in football, two of whom won't be playing in the game. Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson have both opted out in favor of preparing for the NFL Draft. While their absence will surely lighten the weight of Utah's responsibility on defense, the Utes will still have to find a way to stop or slow down the best receiver on the team, Jaxon Smith-Njigba. On Saturday, the No. 11-ranked Utes will attempt to put a cherry on top of their 2021 campaign by snagging a Rose Bowl victory on the first day of 2022. Utah achieved an 8-1 record in conference play and has won nine of its last 10 games entering this year's Rose Bowl contest. The Utes impressed with two dominant victories over Pac-12 North champion Oregon this season, including a rout over the Ducks in the conference title game on Dec. 3. Utah then has the LA schools in back-to-back weeks, first going to UCLA and then returning home to USC. The Bruins got a grad transfer QB today, so I think he's leaving. It will be interesting to see what the Bruins roster will look like next season since this season seemed to be the season they were expected to break out.

There is still one more game this season, the Granddaddy of them All on New Year's Day, but now we can start planning for next season and what stadiums we're going to be visiting. On Thursday, the Pac-12 released the schedule for all the teams in the conference. In conference play, Utah will have only four home games, but the program gets the benefit of playing USC at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Lincoln Riley's first season coaching the Trojans.

The other home games include the Oregon State game and games against Arizona on Nov. 5 and Stanford on Nov. 12. Jedd Fisch knew what he was getting himself into by taking the head coaching job at Arizona last off-season. Arizona finished the season with a 1-11 record, with their only win coming against a Cal team that was depleted due to COVID-19 cases and contact tracing. The big highlight on the conference schedule will be a Nov. 19 trip to Eugene to take on Oregon. The Utes beat the Ducks twice this season, including on Dec. 3 in the Pac-12 championship games, sending them to their first Rose Bowl on New Year's Day against Ohio State (2 p.m., ESPN). The conference also announced August 17 as the day in which fall camps can begin.

The conference also announced that the Pac-12 Championship game will not take place in Las Vegas at the new Allegiant Stadium. Instead, the game will take place at the team deemed the home team by the conference. The championship game will take place in Las Vegas starting in 2021. The 11-week schedule is set to start play on Saturday, September 26 for the Utes as they take on Washington State.

The team won't play their first home game of the season until Saturday, October 10 when the Utes will host Oregon State. Utah holds a 5-4 lead in the series and has won four of the last five matchups with the Cardinal. Notes – Even though most people are picking Arizona to finish last in the Pac-12, expect the Wildcats to be up for the challenge this week. This is Senior day and Military Appreciation day at the stadium. Both teams will be familiar with each other as they share two out-of-conference opponents.

This will provide plenty of opportunities to check each other's strategies on film. Every other pair of teams plays one another following their respective bye weeks. And it looks like our post-bye-week game could get moved to Thursday or Friday. Since taking control of the Utes 17 years ago, Whittingham has cemented himself as perhaps one of the greatest coaching figures in the history of sports in the Beehive State. It's the first Rose Bowl game ever for the Utes while Ohio State makes its third appearance since 2010. The Buckeyes have won three straight Rose Bowl games dating back to 1997 and coach Ryan Day looks for his first non-College Football Playoff bowl game win since taking over the Buckeyes.

The Utah Utes have played their home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium since 1998, which stands on the location of the original Ute Stadium. Rice-Eccles stadium holds over 45,000 fans, and was home to the Olympics in 2002. The Utes have posted over an impressive winning percentage at Rice Eccles, and it has proven to be one of the toughest places for opponents to play in the Pac-12. A couple of hours before kickoff Ute fans line Guardsman Way and give high fives and encouragement to Ute Coaches and players in the Ute Walk. The Utah Utes home bench is on the Rice-Eccles Stadium sideline in front of sections E33-E39. The game circled on the calendar of every Utah football fan is their annual rivalry game against BYU.

This game is legendary as Utah vs BYU has been played over 100 times. The game is known as the Holy War and a seat inside the stadium for this game will demonstrate how intense this football rivalry is between these two Utah schools. Whether the game is at Rice-Eccles or in Provo, expect a sold out crowd. The Ohio State Buckeyes and Utah Utes hope to cap off their impressive seasons with a Rose Bowl win on January 1.

The Buckeyes fell short of College Football Playoff expectations, while the Utes emerged from the Pac-12 to punch a ticket to one of the sport's premier bowl games. The Bruins had their best season under Chip Kelly in 2021, finishing with an 8-4 record. They couldn't finish their season in a bowl game after the Holiday Bowl was canceled hours before kickoff. Some players from the 2021 team could have this game circled on their calendar as a revenge game. Last season, SDSU held off Utah in triple overtime in Carson, California. That was the game that officially started the Cam Rising era.

Charlie Brewer was benched in the third quarter and Rising nearly led Utah to a massive comeback victory. The University of Utah women's basketball program has had five consecutive games postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. In an effort to get back on the floor, the program announced that they have added a non-conference game against UC Riverside on Friday, January 14. Utah's trip to Gainesville will mark the first time the Utes have played a regular-season game against an SEC team since a loss at Tennessee on Sept. 15, 1984. The Utes are 1-6 all-time against the SEC, the one win coming in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, 31-17, to cap an unbeaten 13-0 season.
